Description
The Chicago Sears Tower Soaring Skyward.
The 108-story, 1,451-foot (442 m) skyscraper was designed by Bruce John Graham and engineered by Fazlur Rahman Khan. Construction began in 1970 and the tower was completed in 1973. At completion in 1973, it surpassed the World Trade Center towers in New York to become the tallest building in the world, a title it held for nearly 25 years. The tower remains the second tallest building in the US (after One World Trade Center which was completed in July 2013 and opened in November 2014).
The Sears Tower was renamed Willis Tower on July 16, 2009.
In 2015, the Blackstone Group completed purchase of the tower for a reported $1.3 billion, the highest price ever paid for a U.S. property outside of New York City.
The building reflected in the tower is 311 South Wacker, a post-modern 65-story skyscraper completed in 1990, Designed by Architect Kohn Pedersen Fox.
